Re: Visual Novel Thread
The Type-Moon stuff is easy to get, you can pretty much download it from anywhere. Plus, Mirror-Moon did an excellent English-translation patch for both Tsukihime (and Kagetsu Tohya) and Fate/Stay Night that shouldn't be too hard to find. I should still have them sitting around on one harddrive or another, if you need them. If you're going to play any of the 07-Expansion stuff, I recommend getting the patch that replaces the original visuals with the PS2/PS3 art respectively. There is a finished English patch for Kanon, but you might have trouble finding it at this point.

What? Was that someone...drinking a cup of coffee...held by someone else's foot? And besides, I was joking. One of my friends used to troll me with that sort of thing, so I kinda learned to stop caring.

Re: Visual Novel Thread
The Holy Grail War--a war fought not between nations, but just seven individuals. Seven magi selected by the Grail and armed with Servants for the singular purpose of claiming the grand prize: a single, limitless wish granted by the Grail itself. These Servants are no mere familiars or spirits; they are the manifestation of a miracle beyond the scope of modern thaumaturgy. They are the heroic souls of the legendary figures of myth and lore, divided into seven classes: Saber, Archer, Lancer, Rider, Caster, Berserker, and Assassin.Zeldaman2.0 wrote:Care to describe this Grail War for us?
Basically, a bunch of magi fight each other over the Holy Grail using legendary heroes/villains to do most of the actual face-smashing. Servants are ridiculously powerful to the point where it's difficult for one to kill another, even if they have a well defined advantage. Because of that, almost all fights are one-on-one and there are a number of skirmishes before anyone starts getting knocked out. That also drives many magi to pair-up or form small teams in order to get an early advantage. Plus, the Nasu-verse, where all of this takes place, has an extremely well-defined system of magic and it is quite limited in many regards. In other words, most magi are only tenuously separated from normal people and could never take on a Servant.
For an idea, the Servants in the 5th Holy Grail War are as follows:
King Arthur was Saber, Cu Chulainn for Lancer, Medusa for Rider, Medea for Caster, Hercules for Berserker, and *Massive Spoilers* for Archer. Not gonna ruin that Archer thing. But, you get the idea.

Re: Visual Novel Thread
If you are going to get into the Nasu-verse, I would recommend you start with Tsukihime. It makes a decent primer for the broad strokes of how the universe works. Otherwise, some of the concepts in Fate/Stay Night (which is the Grail War) might seem confusing or insane. While not one of his visual/novels, I would also recommend looking into Kara No Kyoukai--a series of novels he wrote back in '95. They serve as the prototype for the current Nasu-verse and are quite superb. At the very least, you could watch the movies, which are pretty neat if not entirely accurate.
Still, they're pretty awesome: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBrWcKIteAo
On the note of a forum based Grail War, I'll probably talk to the admin about running one. They more or less work like very elaborate duels tied together by a long narrative arc. Not much different from a regular RP really, just that everyone is, to some degree, pitted against one another. The goal should be to come together to write a strong story with compelling action and characters, of course, not just to 'win' the game.

Yeah, you do realize how difficult this would be to orchestrate on the forum... I'm sure you're aware already, but we don't exactly have a ton of talent. That would take TON of work to put together properly.EpicMasterMind wrote:The goal should be to come together to write a strong story with compelling action and characters, of course, not just to 'win' the game.

I'm down for some kind of PvP. So, quick summary, what order do I play these VN in, and what's the whole list for me to check out on PC for Free?

Re: Visual Novel Thread
You can basically just play Tsukihime and then Fate/Stay Night, if you want. You'll want a flow chart of each because they are notorious for the number of bad-ends they have. FSN has around 80 of them and you might not even realize you're on a bad-end until an hour after the choice. If you can read Japanese, you can go ahead and get into Witch on the Holy Night since it hasn't been translated yet. Those three represent the biggest entrances into Type-Moon's line-up of V/Ns.Zeldaman2.0 wrote:I'm down for some kind of PvP. Re: Visual Novel Thread
Not really. Epic, Magoo, and I, along with a fourth friend of ours, actually ran our own small Grail War. Four is a fine amount of participants, but if you ask me... there's shouldn't be any more than 7.Admin (HalcyonWandering) wrote:Yeah, you do realize how difficult this would be to orchestrate on the forum...
