As for joining... I'm surprised Doc hasn't told you anything. Well, in that story, your character should probably just wander their way to the House and ask to stay there. There's no need for a complicated reason, or establishing that your character is powerful by having half an army follow him, only for the guy to turn around and obliterate them, or anything like that. In other stories, it gets more complex, sometimes, but in this case, that'll do. You COULD go for something more complicated, like waiting until some of the story happens, then maybe joining in during an arc, your character crossing paths with some of ours when they're out doing something, decide to join 'em for the sake of whatever their goals are, and decide to stick with them.

TL;DR: Just walk up to the House and ask to stay, that's the basic idea.
